Bleeding victim found at Vashi station

Mumbai: An Ola cab driver has been arrested in Vashi for raping a 14-year-old girl by enticing her with ₹500 and snacks, police said on Saturday. The incident came to light on Friday when the girl was spotted near Vashi railway station, bleeding.

Senior PI Ajay Landge, Vashi police station, said, “She narrated her ordeal to passers-by. She said she was promised money and snacks by a man, who took her to a hill nearby and allegedly raped her. She said the accused, identified as Dharmann Yalappa Kuntoji, 25, abandoned her there, from where she walked to the railway station. The accused was identified from CCTV footage and arrested on Saturday.”

The victim, a resident of a slum in Rabale, had come to Vashi on Thursday evening to beg for alms with her younger brother, aged five. When she was near Bikaner sweet shop, Kuntoji pulled up in his cab, a Wagon R, and offered the siblings ₹500, snacks and a ride. As per the complaint registered, Kuntoji drove them to an isolated quarry in Turbhe. There, he asked the boy to wait near the car while he took the girl into the bushes nearby and raped her.

Police Inspector Kisan Gaikwad, Vashi police station, said, “When he realised she was bleeding, the accused abandoned them. The victim and her brother walked to Vashi railway station by Friday. We found the accused’s car number from CCTV footage and traced him to his residence at Turbhe Naka.” Kuntoji has been arrested under IPC section 376 (rape) and sections 4 and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
