Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president M M Hassan will observe a 24-hour hunger strike on August 15 to register the Congress party’s protest against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Sangh Parivar’s “communal and fascist agenda and the increasing attacks on Dalits, backward classes and minority communities”.
The KPCC president will go on hunger strike soon after the Independence Day flag-hoisting at the party headquarters, Indira Bhavan.
Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala will officially inaugurate it and former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will initiate the conclusion of the hunger strike by offering lime juice to Mr. Hassan on August 16.
In a statement here on Friday, the KPCC said over 30 persons belonging to Dalit, backward and minority communities have been killed in the name of protecting cows and these sections were being constantly hunted down in communal violence.
The Prime Minister was prompt in condemning such killings, but hardly took any concrete steps to suppress them.
The Centre was shutting its eyes to the killings in BJP-ruled States.
The Union Home Minister did not lose time to seek explanation from State Chief Ministers whenever a BJP worker came under attack, but the same sentiment was not expressed when atrocities were committed against Dalits and minorities. Instead of allowing a debate in Parliament, the NDA government suspended Opposition members.
