A Nanganallur forum has drawn up a plan for effective draining of rainwater into Veerangal Odai

The Nanganallur Chapter of People’s Welfare Association, a forum that takes up civic issues, has asked the Greater Chennai Corporation to construct stormwater drains and culverts to facilitate draining of rainwater into Veerangal Odai at Vanuvampet.

At present, rainwater flowing from Telegraph Colony, Ranga Colony, Kanagambal Colony and parts of B. V. Nagar in Nanganallur gets collected at a culvert at the intersection of 46th Street and Sixth Main Road in Nanganallur.

Similarly, rainwater from Hindu Colony, Civil Aviation Colony, Rifle Grounds’ and Directorate General Quality Assurance Complex flows into the same culvert.

Besides this, rainwater from parts of Fourth Main Road, 41st Street, 42nd Street and 43rd Street gets collected at the same culvert.“The culverts and stormwater drains on 100-Feet Road are constructed only up to the intersection of 46th Street and 100-Feet Road in Nanganallur. On the other side of the 100-Feet Road (towards MGR Salai), stormwater drains and culverts extend only up to a few yards. At the intersection of 46th Street and Sixth Main Road in Nanganallur and on both sides of 100-Feet Road, stormwater drains and culverts have to be extended considerbaly to enable flow of rainwater into Veerangal Odai,” says V. Rama Rao, secretary of the Association.

The culvert at the intersection of 46th Street and Sixth Main Road in Nanganallur is unable to drain rainwater, which it receives from surrounding localities, into Veerangal Odai, as the canal is situated at a higher level.

As a resulr, there is flooding at Macmillan Colony and Lakshmi Nagar, which are at a lower level.

The Greater Chennai Corporation officials have said that work on construction of stormwater drains and culverts will begin soon.

The Association has also requested that canal be de-silted before the onset of the north-east monsoon.
