Police on Friday said a militant and a civilian were killed in a late night shootout on Thursday in south Kashmir's Anantnag.
A police spokesman said an operation was launched at Herpora-Kanelwan-Karvel, Anantnag, after a specific input about the presence of three militants on Thursday night.
"Militants fired on the search party, resulting in an exchange of fire. Around midnight, taking advantage of darkness, two militants fired and managed to escape," said the spokesman.
In the shootout, one civilian was killed. "One militant of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, Yawar Nissar Shergujri alias Algazi, was also killed," said the spokesman.
The police said one self-loading rifle, 2 magazines, 40 rounds, one Chinese handgrenade and a pouch were recovered from the slain militant. One solider, Rifleman Rohit Kumar, also sustained injuries.
