How to Make Your Own Breakfast Sausage

It only takes 10 minutes

August 4, 2017

Enough with the frozen sausage already. Not only is it easy enough to make your own breakfast patties, but it's a whole lot tastier—and healthier—than settling for the store-bought stuff. All it takes for a hearty, mouthwatering DIY sausage is ground pork, spices, and a bit of maple syrup (yes, syrup). There's 10 grams of protein to help keep you full, plus a savory flavor that's hard to beat.

Pair your patties with the usual bacon and eggs, or throw them in a breakfast burrito topped with hot sauce.

What You Need:

  • 1 lb ground pork
  • 3 1/2 tsp fine salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp dried sage
  • 1 Tbsp maple syrup

How to Do It:

  1. Using your hands, fold the sage, salt, and black pepper into the pork. Mix for one minute before you add the maple syrup, and then mix for another 4 minutes.
  2. Divide the mixture into 8 portions and shape them into 2-inch patties. Cook the patties in a large skillet over medium-low heat until golden brown on both sides, about 3 minutes per side.
