Zoo officials found a rare snake a few days ago, which is until now known to be a inhabitant of one locality in Telangana.
The Yellow-Collared Wolf Snake, measuring about 46 cm long, was found by three reptile keepers of the zoo park in the vicinity of the zoo. The snake has a distinct yellow-collar like pattern extending from its head to upper back. According to zoo officials, it was first described by reptile experts after being spotted in Tamil Nadu. It was later described after sightings in Tirupathi in 2014. A few other documented sightings were reported from Karnataka.
Zoo curator Shivani Dogra said the finding from around the zoo park adds a new locality record to the snake’s habitat in the country. She added that several species of snakes, both rare and common, were found in the vicinity of the zoo park. The rescued snake was later released in the wilderness of the zoo.
