Will shift if benefits are provided: Drivers

What started as a simple drivers’ movement demanding certain income protection has evolved into a company that will have a policy-making body comprised of drivers leading the way in the company.

While the idea initially proposed, a break-even business model that doesn’t charge drivers a commission, did not work out, drivers are more than happy with the rates proposed by Huli technologies, the company that will operate the new cab service.

Fixed at 12% for the near future, the commission will ensure a slew of benefits for the drivers besides making a small profit for the investor as well. “Besides insurance, we will also cover the costs of yearly road tax payments, insurance payments and oil change and car wash,” said Tanveer Pasha, who will be on the board of directors of Huli Technologies.

Drivers, offered such benefits, are most likely to take up the offer and switch to the new service.

“Insurance alone costs us around ₹20,000 per year. The cost of tax and vehicle maintenance is also in a few thousands. None of these are covered by the other aggregators who are charging commission between 20-25%. If this service starts, I know a lot of people who are waiting to shift,” said Suresh B.M., who currently drives with one of the aggregators.

For customers also, the idea of a fixed fare is an appealing one. “It will help keep a check on expenses as currently, the fares vary quite frequently. While one might jump at the offers, you have to pay more when the price surges,” said Manikandan R., who uses cabs for his daily commute.
