In a horrific accident, a young dietician was hit by two SUVs – the first car flung her into the air while the second one ran over her as soon as she landed – in south Delhi’s Saket on Monday.
Now comatose and on ventilator ssupport, the 26-year-old woman is battling for life even as the police are yet to trace either of the two SUVs.
Varnita Garg, a junior dietician working for Pushpawati Singhania Research Institute (PSRI), is the sole earning member of her family. She was reporting for work when the accident happened right outside the hospital.
Guard a witness
Dhruv Singh, a security guard working in the same hospital, witnessed the entire incident. Mr. Singh and Ms. Garg had both alighted from the same bus at Pushp Vihar bus stand around 7:10 a.m. minutes before the accident.
According to him, they were crossing the signal at Metro Enclave on the road linking Select City Walk to Press Enclave when the vehicles hit her one after the other within a few seconds.
“She was just a few steps ahead of me. I saw two SUVs, both being driven at very high speeds in a rash and zig-zag manner, coming towards us. In a flash, one of them hit madam (Ms. Garg). who was thrown at least 20 metres away, and just when she landed and was already bleeding, the second car crushed her,” said Mr. Singh.
Registration number
The vehicles both drove away and Dhruv and other staff members rushed towards her. The registration number of one of the vehicles was noted by a pedestrian, who handed it over to the police, said Mr. Singh.
She was immediately taken to PSRI Hospital by the locals and has been admitted to the ICU. She has grievous injuries all over her body including major head injuries, said the police. Debjani Banerjee, Chief Dietician of PSRI and head of the department Ms. Garg works in, said she was moved to AIIMS Trauma Centre and is said to be extremely critical.
“We have registered an FIR under IPC Sections 279 (rash driving) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others). We are investigating the case based on several eyewitness accounts,” said a police officer.
No arrests
However, no arrests have been made in the case yet. The police are yet to find out details of the vehicles and drivers involved. Varnita hails from Muzaffarpur in Bihar and lives with her family in Madangir. She joined PSRI two years ago and, after her father’s death, is the only earning member in a family of three that includes her mother and younger brother, said Ms. Banerjee.
