India vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test Day 1: Twin tons take India to 344/3 at Stumps

India dominate first day of the second Test against Sri Lanka by reaching 334 for the loss of three wickets in Colombo. Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane, both unbeaten, scored centuries to take their team to a big score at Stumps.

India had a dominating day of cricket after they made 344 runs on the first day of the second Test and lost only three wickets in Colombo. India won the toss on a dry SSC pitch and decided to bat against Sri Lanka. KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan gave India a decent start before the latter was dimissed. Cheteshwar Pujara joined Rahul and scored quick runs. Rahul was run-out after his fifty. Virat Kohli was out cheaply but Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane scored quick runs and took India past 300. Pujara scored his 13th Test century while Rahane scored his 9th as both shared a 211-run stand for the fourth wicket

5:03 pm: Stumps on Day 1 in Colombo! India days by a distance. An hour after Lunch and Sri Lanka were right in this before Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara’s 211-run stand blew them out. India 334 for 3 at Stumps.

4:57 pm: Review! Sri Lanka get the wicket of Rahane leg-before wicket. But, he reviews it instantly. Inside edge probably. The replays confirm it. No loss

4:49 pm: CENTURY! Ajinkya Rahane you beauty! The Indian vice-captain takes quick single and reaches his ninth Test century and sixth outside India. What a brilliant innings

4:39 pm: Seven overs remaining in the day. Sri Lanka are forced to operate with spinners after Pradeep walked off the field. Pujara and Rahane continue to accumulate runs

4:31 pm: Nuwan Pradeep, the only pacer Sri Lanka have for this match, has walked off the pitch after what looks like a hamstring issue. Still nine overs to be bowled today

4:23 pm: Review! Sri Lanka have asked for a review after umpire turned down a leg-before appeal against Rahane. It looks like outside the line of off-stump. No bat there and Rahane has missed the sweep. Hit on the back leg but the impact is outside the line and it’s missing the wickets. It’s the 80th over so why not take a review.

4:15 pm: India bring up their 300. They still have seven wickets in hand. The pitch is on the slower side and batting fourth will be a big issue for Sri Lanka. Brilliant platform for India

4:05 pm: Final hour of play coming up in Colombo. Pujara is 111* and Rahane is 72*. India are 292 for the loss of three wickets after 74 overs. New balls still 6 overs away and 16 overs total to play in the day

3:52 pm: A big partnership between Pujara and Rahane. It’s is now 150 runs. Sri Lanka would have thought they have a opening when Virat Kohli got out but since then, it’s been Rahane and Pujara

3:45 pm: Runs flowing for India! Rahane gets another boundary. India 278/3 after 70 overs. 20 overs to go in the day’s play. 10 overs before the new ball is available.

3:22 pm: Half-century number 13 for Ajinkya Rahane in Tests. Takes a single and reaches the land mark. It has been one of the better innings from the Indian batsman. Can he get to the three-figure mark?

3:00 pm: Pujara has been solid through out this innings. Rahane has also approached this innings in a positive manner and not taking any chances

Cheteshwar Pujara is approaching yet another Test century. The batsmen are back the middle for the final session of play. India resume at 238 for the loss of three wickets. Pujara on 89*

2:40 pm: Tea on Day 2! What a session. India score 137 runs but lose two wickets. Some quick runs and some wickets. Pujara and Rahane have given India a perfect platform to score more runs in the final session

2:30 pm: This is a stunning approach from India. An hour before Tea and the runs flow. Rahane and Pujara taking on the bowlers and scoring some quick runs. No chance for the fielders to cut short the boundaries

2:15 pm: Some dark clouds over Colombo! India are 207 for the loss of three wickets. Dhananjaya de Silva to bowl for Sri Lanka

2:08 pm: 200 up for India. The fourth fifty for India has come in just 48 balls. Rahane is scoring run-a-ball. Every time Sri Lanka have tried to make a comeback, India have had a partnership

1:57 pm: FIFTY! In his 50th Test and on a testing pitch, Cheteshwar Pujara gets a 112-ball half-century. Top innings if you see the way he has batted. The pitch is not as easy as it was in Galle

1:52 pm: This Pujara innings has been another masterpiece. He has not played a bad shot and despite the turn on the pitch, Pujara looks in complete control. He has been slow for sure but looks in the zone

1:40 pm: Dilruwan continues to bowl. India are 153 for 3. Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane at the crease. The first hour after Tea has been Sri Lanka’s as they pick up two wickets to make a comeback

1:33 pm: Cheteshwar Pujara tucks one on the off-side and runs a couple. 4000 Test runs for Pujara in his 50th match for India. What an achievement for him!

1:21 pm: WICKET! Virat Kohli departs! A stunning catch at slips from Angelo Mathews. It’s a bit wide and Kohli goes after it. Hit hard but takes the upper edge and flies to Mathews who takes a one-handed moving catch. It’s good that he moved on the one-leg.

1:11 pm: The plan to bowl short to Kohli has not worked for Sri Lanka yet. He has done well to avoid it. India are 125 for the loss of two wickets. India scoring at almost 3.5 runs per over. Herath to continue

01:00 pm: Virat Kohli is the new man in for India. The captain scored a century in the first Test. Can he continue his form. Nuwan Pradeep is back into the attack. Sri Lanka going for the attack

12:49 pm: Run-out! KL Rahul is furious. Rahul pushes the ball on the off-side and calls for a run. Pujara responds. Both batsmen stutter and halt. Rahul has to run back but he is late. Rahul has to go for 57

12:40 pm: Players are back in the middle for the second of play in Colombo. India resume at 101/1. Just the one run from the over. India are 102 for the loss of one wicket

Big session coming up for India. If they can keep their wickets in hands, a big score can be achieved. With the pitch seeing some turn now, even a 300 or 350-run total will be good for India.

12:00 noon: Lunch on Day 1! India will be very happy with this session as they reach 101 for the loss of 1 wicket. Brilliant start from Dhawan and Rahul. The former got out for 35 and Rahul is unbeaten on 52*. Pujara giving company

11:56 am: Goes over the infield and it’s half-century for KL Rahul! His sixth consecutive in Test cricket. Playing his first Test since March and he has done well in this comeback match. Brilliant, patient innings from him

11:50 am: India have slowed down a bit in the last half-and-hour or so. The spinners have done well to contain the run-rate. Also, with Lunch round the corner, Rahul and Pujara have been cautious

11:42 am: India are scoring at a rate of close to four runs per over.  This is good run rate. Rahul is approaching his fifty. Herath to continue for Sri Lanka. He has been a bit expensive by his standards today

11:31 am: Nuwan Pradeep back in the attack. India are 94 for 1. KL Rahul to face him. Decent delivery first up. Defended. Second ball is down the leg-side

11:20 am: KL Rahul pounces on a short ball from Pushpakumara, hits it for four over mid-wicket. Brilliant shot. India are 84 for 1 after 18 overs. Herath to continue and he is getting some turn now

11:13 am: India are 77 for the loss of one wicket after 16 overs. Pujara and KL Rahul looking steady out in the middle. Rangana Herath to contiune. Rahul on strike. Tucked to the outfield for a single. Pujara defends the second ball. Comes down the pitch, offers dead defence on third. Down the pitch again, rolls over his wrist and past the mid-wicket field, single. Short, Rahul punches from backfoot, single. Finishes the over with a Pujara defence. India 80 for 1

11:00 am: Pushpakumara on debut and will bowl his first ball of Test cricket. This is his 100th FC game. KL Rahul coming down the pitch to him. Nice use of the feet. Pujara is happy to defend. Decent first over in Test cricket. Drinks!

10:45 am: WICKET! Shikhar Dhawan tries to sweeps against Dilruwan Perera. The ball slips under the bat and has struck him on the pad. Umpire turns down the appeal. Review straightaway! The ball is pitching in line, no bat involved. It is straightening enough to hit the wickets. Dhawan has to go.

10:39 am: 50 up for India. Karunaratne will continue to bowl. Big appeal for a leg-before against KL Rahul. It hit him close to the knee-roll. But umpire give it out! First wicket for Sri Lanka. Rahul is talking to Dhawan. Signals he has hit it on the knee-roll. He reviews.

10:31 am: So Sri Lanka are done with spin for now. After three overs from Herath, they bring on Dimuth Karunaratne. He will bowl his little away swingers.

10:24 am: Brilliant finish to the over from KL Rahul. Consecutive fours off Herath. Brilliant use of his feat. Some bad fielding as well at mid-off. India 32 for no loss after 6 overs

10:21 am: Sri Lanka have long-leg, deep mid-wicket and long-on for Dhawan. Easy single on offer. He takes it. Not the ideal way you want to build the pressure. Herath continues

10:16 am: This is brilliant from Sri Lanka. Pressure is on Dhawan and Rahul. Dhawan is living dangerously in the middle. Runs coming but nothing confident

10:09 am: It’s not turning but it looks threatening. Anxious moments for Dhawan in that second over. Outside edge but doesn’t carry to slips. He also gets a six coming down the ground and sending it over long-on

10:04 am: Four runs from the first over for India. Dhawan puts one away for his first shot. End of the over. Rangana Herath will be bowling the second over! KL Rahul on strike
