Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis has said that the administration was planning to create jobs for the differently-abled persons in the district.
She was speaking after inaugurating a function to provide free aids and appliances for persons with disabilities under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of Engineers India Ltd. (EIL) in association Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India, here on Wednesday.
The programme was supported by the district administration and the district unit of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS). As many as 371 differently-abled persons were provided with aids and appliances worth ₹40 lakh on the occasion.
Ms. Francis said that in its plan, the administration, would, among other things, be taking up the segregation of recyclable and reusable material in a big way. The used material collected would be brought and kept at one place. It will require a large number of persons to sit in one place and separate or segregate the used material. Differently-abled persons who are unemployed can take up this work as it will not require much travelling. Furthermore, educational qualifications will not be mandatory for this job. This will not only help them earn but also become economically independent, she said
Moreover, the work would not end abruptly as garbage is generated daily. Those interested can register with either the District Officer for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities or with the local Indian Red Cross Society, Ms. Francis said.
Basrur Rajeev Shetty, Chairman of State unit of IRCS, Umesh Prabhu, President of district unit of IRCS, and K. Swaminathan, Deputy General Manager of EIL, were present.
