‘Distressed’ MU prof. to seek VRS

Mumbai: The University of Mumbai is facing a fresh controversy, with the HoD (Economics and Public Policy) announcing his decision to go in for voluntary retirement rather than continue in the present set-up. The university is mired in the ongoing row over the poor implementation of the online checking system for answer scripts, delayed results and impending removal of its Vice Chancellor, Dr. Sanjay Deshmukh.

Prof. Neeraj Hatekar said in his Facebook post, “Whatever is going on at the Mumbai University is deeply distressing and the time has come for those who feel for the university to come together and act. The Joint Action Committee for Improvement of Higher Education in Maharashtra calls for those interested to join it for concerted action. The time for silence is over. Also, let me inform you all that I have decided to take voluntary retirement. I realise I will be more effective in working towards the betterment of the university fighting for it from the outside rather than being a part of a hopeless, spineless system led by stooges who only understand expediency of survival. I feel uncomfortable that earning my daily sustenance involves deference to such a system.”
