Surgeons from Belagavi performed a complex surgery to remove a cancerous tumour from a two-year-old. The growth was nearly one-fourth of the child’s body weight.

A child of a poor family in Bagalkote district was referred to Sharada Paediatric Hospital in Belagavi after being diagnosed with a tumour. The growth on his left kidney occupied half of his abdomen.

A team of doctors, led by Vijay Pujar, confirmed it as a case of kidney cancer, also called Nephroblastoma or Wilms’ tumour. The child was given medicines for 10 weeks to be stabilized and make the tumour operable.

It was removed on Saturday after a long surgery. It weighed 2 kg, while the weight of the patient was around 8 kg.

“Wilms’ tumour in children can grow silently without causing any pain. Most cancer growth in children is curable unlike in adults. Parents should seek early medical advice,” Dr. Pujar said in a release.
