Delhi feels the sting of vector-borne diseases

‘58 malaria cases reported last week’

Two hospitals in the Capital reported deaths due to dengue in July, but areport on vector-borne diseases released by the civic bodies on Monday hasn’t registered these. This, even as the number of dengue, chikungunya and malaria cases have registered an upward trend.

Of the two deaths, one was reported from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and the other from Lok Nayak Hospital.

Mosquito breeding

At least 58 fresh cases of malaria were reported in the Capital this past week as per the municipal report. The number of dengue cases stood at 118 while the number of chikungunya cases was 140 till July 29, it said. The report added that breeding of mosquitoes was reported at 80,411 households in Delhi.

As many as 63 cases of dengue were reported in July alone. Till January 14, only two chikungunya cases had been reported, while no dengue cases had surfaced till then.

Last year, at least 21 dengue deaths were reported, including nine at AIIMS. However, the number according to the South Delhi Municipal Corporation stood at 10. Also, 2016 saw 15 deaths due to complications triggered by chikungunya. The tally according to civic bodies, however, was zero.
