The 72-foot-tall Ganesha, after blessing denizens from Government Music College grounds for two years, has moved on to Gandhinagar’s Gymkhana Grounds. About 100 artisans, welders and workers are working overtime to install the huge eco-friendly idol — two days before Vinayaka Chaviti, which falls on August 25.
Speaking to The Hindu the Doondi Ganesh Seva Samithi founder D. Rakesh said that 50% of work has been finished and soon the limbs of the idol will be riveted with the main frame.
“We are erecting an 80-foot iron shed with a cover to protect the idol. There is a provision for water supply as well. The shed can withstand heavy rain and strong winds”.
He said the samithi had brought moulders from Ramoji Film City under the supervision of Sundaram, who erected sets for Rajamouli’s Baahubali and other films.
Mr. Rakesh said three lorry loads of mud will be used to cover the limbs of the Lord and on top of it Bombay clay, which is a refined clay powder, will be used to give a smooth finish. “After applying Bombay clay, vegetable colours will be used to give a bright and radiant look”.
He said so far eight tonnes of iron has been used for the scaffolding purpose. “We are also having provision for water sprinkler so that the idol can be melted once the festival is over after the 11-day festivities”.
This year the theme is “Mushikavahana Gajanana” and the Lord will be seen taking ride on a mice-driven chariot. “Seven mice along with chariot are ready, “he added.
He said as many as 5,000 clay Ganeshas will be distributed to the general publish a day before the festival to promote eco-friendly festival. “We want to discourage harmful idols made of plaster of Paris and other chemicals. The 11-day festivities will end on September 4”.
“This year we are inviting Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and his family for the final day celebrations. We are also inviting Ministers both in the State and Central Governments,” said Mr. Rakesh.
