The Kerala Women’s Commission will soon ask the State government to ensure that sanitary napkin vending machines are set up in all schools.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the commission’s first sitting in Kozhikode after the new panel was inducted in June, member M.S. Thara on Monday said the ‘Kalalaya Jyothi’ project sought to create awareness among girls, right from high school classes, about their basic rights.
The project, which had been in a dormant state for a long time, would be activated in all districts, she said.
Most of the cases brought before the commission on Monday related to domestic issues while there were some about workplace harassment.
There were two complaints related to property rights. In one, a 90-year-old woman refused to financially support the wife and child of her deceased son. The elderly woman maintained that none of her children had any right to her property and she would rather donate it to an orphanage. The commission convinced her to consider her grandchild’s plight before making a move.
In another case, an elderly woman complained that her grandson was asserting his right to her property and threatening her neighbours. The commission’s investigation found that the grandson had earned his right for a part of the property, but could not identify its location. He was referred to the Government Medical College here for counselling.
The panel solved 27 out of the 70 complaints that came up before it.
