UP Cabinet gives nod to compulsory marriage registration

The Cabinet today gave its approval to a proposal making registration of all marriages taking place in the state mandatory, a release said here.

"After the implementation of the Marriage Registration Guidelines-2017, all marriages taking place within the state or where either of the parties is a permanent resident of Uttar Pradesh, will have to be registered," the release said.


According to the decision taken in the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, provision has been made to apply for registration of marriage online, it said.

The number of both the husband and wife will have to be provided in the application form.

"If the marriage is registered within a year of marriage, then Rs 10 will be levied as registration charges. If it is done after a year, the registration charges will be Rs 50," the release said.

Relevant documents will have to be uploaded during the online registration of the marriage. The marriage registration document will be auto-generated after verification, it said.

The Cabinet also approved the construction of a high security jail in Lalitpur.

The new jail will come up on 100 acres of land, and will have the capacity of housing 4,500 inmates, the release said.
