With the spurt in robberies, thefts and other crime in the last few days in the Vijayawada Commissionerate, the police have stepped up vigil and are giving ‘counselling’ for rowdy elements in the city.
The department launched cordon and searches, foot marches and took many rowdy sheeters into custody in the last two days. Raids were conducted in Ajitsingh Nagar, New Raja Rajeshwaripet, Lenin Centre, Durga Ghat, Prakasam Barrage, Chittinagar, Gadda Bomma and Nehru Bomma Centres and other places.
“About 450 rowdy, KD, DC and suspect sheets are there in the city. Police externed a few rowdy elements who were involved in rowdy, dacoity, rape, extortion and settlement cases,” said a police officer who gave counselling to the criminals.
The police arrested 29 blade batch members and 34 persons addicted to ganja and were attacking people at public places. The blade batch criminals injured a person and robbed him in the city a couple of days.
“Blade batch criminals carry blades. They inflict injuries, create panic and rob the passengers at isolated places, particularly during night hours at bus and railway stations. The police intensified patrolling at the railway station and the Pandit Nehru Bus Station,” a Task Force official said.
Vigil stepped up
Police Commissioner D. Gautam Sawang told The Hindu the police had intensified vigil on rowdies and anti-social elements. Instructions had been given to execute Non-Bailable Warrants (NBWs), conduct vehicle checkups, cordon searches and raids.
Problematic areas
“The police identified the problematic areas and rowdy elements are under control in the Commissionerate. We are trying to reform them and the police will act tough against those who do not give up their criminal nature. The police will not consider any political recommendations with regard to rowdy elements. About four rowdy sheeters were externed from the city for continuing their activities,” Mr. Sawang said.
Joint Commissioner of Police B.V. Ramana Kumar said orders had been issued to summon all the KDs, rowdies, suspect sheets and dossier criminals in their respective stations and counsel them. The raids would continue, he said.
