The government on Monday introduced in the Lok Sabha a Bill to amend the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act 1971 to enable speedy eviction of employees and lawmakers overstaying in government accommodations.

The Bill will make it easier for the Centre to evict its employees, Members of Parliament and other dignitaries from the residential accommodation provided by the government, in case they stay put beyond the period they are issued the licences for.

Narendra Singh Tomar, Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, introduced the Bill, which would amend the 1971 Act to make it possible for the estate officers to initiate “summary eviction” against overstaying lawmakers and government officers.
