The day-long State-wide bandh called by the BJP in Kerala, in protest against the killing of an RSS man, paralysed small trade and business activities between districts across Tamil Nadu and Kerala border, and disrupted transport services on Sunday.
Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation and private bus operators suspended their services to different parts of Kerala since morning, and privately operated SUVs too remained off road. Similarly, Kerala State Road Transport Corporation did not operate buses to Theni district.
However, essential commodities like milk and meat were sent to Kerala before 6 a.m.
Police personnel manning check-posts near the State borders stopped all vehicles entering Kerala. Already, Idukki police had advised SUV, van and cab operators in Theni district not to operate their services.
Corporation and private buses were operated till Kumuli, Bodimettu and Cumbum Mettu check-posts.
Vegetables were not sent to Kerala from the wholesale market in Oddanchatram in view of the bandh. The entire stock of vegetables was diverted to other parts of Tamil Nadu. The merchants advised farmers not to bring large quantities of vegetables to the market.
The BJP called the bandh condemning the murder of RSS worker E. Rajesh (34) in an armed attack by a four-member gang at Sreekariyam in Thiruvananthapuram.
Eight persons were arrested in this connection.
