Meet Radhiya Hemchandra, India’s only master groomer and stylist. Her unconditional love for these furry creatures got her started on her own school.

Pet groomers have two things in common their love for the pet and no regular working hours.

“The best part of being a pet groomer or having a profession that doesn’t require regular work hours is that we can set our own work schedule,” says Radhiya. “My grooming school and saloon works between 1 and 8 pm only. I take only four pets for grooming on an average and the rest of my time I teach aspiring individuals to turn their passion to work closely with animals into a lucrative profession.”

These professionals look into care and hygiene of a pet.

Professional know-how

To be a professional pet groomer you do you mainly is to be an animal lover, lots of patience, dedication and an eye for creativity. However, a course in pet grooming can be undertaken along with a professional course related to agriculture or animals.

“I was lucky to have been born in a household where pets were a part of the family. My mother, Yashodhara is an International All Breeds Dog show judge and a leading breeder of dogs in India for over 35 years. I have been closely involved with the rearing and raising of dogs and cats from my early days. We have show dogs, some companion dogs, and some rescued, abandoned and injured dogs and cats as well. Growing up on a farm I understand animals. As a professional, I also believe in giving back to society. For me, society is the animal world. I rescue injured and abandoned animals, nurse the sick and and spread the message of love and kindness to people I come across,” says Radhiya.

Learn on the go

Radhiya is aware that grooming is popular in counties like the U.S., Canada, Italy and Germany. Keeping herself updated with the technical know how is also important and that’s why she travels to the U.S. and Europe every year for grooming and trade shows to stay up to date with theory and techniques apart from updating on technology and equipment. She also attends seminars and workshops which in turn she imparts to my students.

Try your hand

Pet groomers can work with equipment manufactures to test and certify products. They decide grooming techniques and help choose products.
