Construction of new South District Hospital in Margao is expected to be completed by May next year, Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane told Legislative Assembly today.
"We all want the new hospital to get ready. It's proposed to be opened in May 2018, but till then we are ensuring that you have additional doctors at the existing facility," Rane said while responding to a question by the Congress MLA Digambar Kamat who highlighted the "lack of facilities" at the existing District Hospital.
Admitting shortage of staff and equipment at the existing facility, the minister said he had already initiated an exercise to pull out additional doctors from various other government hospitals and post them at the Margao hospital.
The government is trying to ensure the referral from the district hospital to the Goa Medical College and hospital remains minimal.
"We don't want people to move from the district hospital and be dumped in the Goa Medical College," Rane added.
