The Court also ordered Chief Secretary to appoint a Vigilance Commissioner with independent charge to monitor investigation on gutkha scam.

The Madras High Court Bench here on Friday ordered the appointment of “an upright officer with unimpeachable integrity” within two weeks as the State Vigilance Commissioner to monitor the ongoing inquiry by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) into the gutkha scam.

The scam allegedly involves a Minister, two top police officers including the State Director General of Police T.K. Rajendran, and a few other officials. The post of State Vigilance Commissioner is now being held by the Home Secretary.

‘No interference’

The court made it clear that the DGP, Minister concerned and others whose names figure in the gutkha scandal should not interfere with the investigation.

At the same time, the High Court Bench upheld the appointment of Mr. T.K. Rajendran as the DGP despite the allegations against him.
