The HSR Layout police on Thursday arrested a 19-year-old salesman of a jewellery store for reportedly pilfering 850 grams of ornaments worth Rs 25 lakh from the shop over the past two years.
Ganesh Chunilal was caught red-handed by police while trying to sell the valuables at a throwaway price near the BDA Complex. Police have recovered the stolen gold from his possession.
Chunilal had been working for Praveen Jewells owned by Uttamchand Jain in Rajajinagar for the past two years.
Jain had brought him from Pali district of Rajasthan to run his store and treated him like his son. Ganesh was responsible for maintaining the accounts and stocktaking. Police believe he manipulated the records to pilfer gold and managed to avoid suspicion. He later sold the gold at throwaway prices.
Police have asked the store owner to check the stock to ascertain the amount of gold stolen by Chunilal, a senior officer said.
