Stating that unemployment has not been an issue in Tamil Nadu, Higher Education Minister K.P. Anbalagan, said that the real problem on the contrary was the unavailability of qualified people for jobs.
Speaking at the golden jubilee convocation of Madurai Kamaraj University here on Friday, he said that the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation, in collaboration with National Skill Development Corporation, was therefore focussing on providing skill training to youngsters to make them employable.
Pointing out that TN was leading the country by having 60 % of its people in employable age range, he said that the State will have 3.6 lakh semi-skilled and 2.25 lakh fully-skilled people by 2020.
Citing a report released by Confederation of Indian Industry, he said that Tamil Nadu was among the top ten States in the country with highest employable population.
He said that the report also pointed out how the situation had improved over the years and graduates from arts, science and commerce streams and women graduates were getting more employment opportunities in recent years.
“So, I ask all of you to be optimistic and work hard. You should become socially responsible persons,” he said.
Mr. Anbalagan also cited various figures regarding Gross Enrolment Ratio, availability of colleges and allocation of funds to project how Tamil Nadu stood tall among other States in education.
