Southern Railway will study the feasibility of establishing a two-level parking for cars at Katpadi Railway Station, according to Naveen Gulati, divisional railway manager, Chennai.
Mr. Gulati, who was on an inspection of the Katpadi station and a few other places along the section, told reporters on Wednesday that they were looking at how to rationalise and increase the parking area.
He said that establishing a two-level parking was at a discussion stage. “We will have to examine if such a facility is required for the station and if it is feasible,” he said.
His visit to the station was to see what more facilities could be brought in. “We are looking at passenger amenities that can be increased at the station and the status of ongoing work,” he said.
To a question on installation of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras for security of the railway stations, he said RailTel Corporation was installing CCTV cameras and it would be executed quickly.
He added that the work on escalator at Katpadi station would be completed soon.
Southern Railway officials said there was a discussion to set up a two-level parking for cars at the station, and to streamline two-wheeler parking.
“As of now, several two-wheelers are parked outside the parking lot. The officials discussed on how to accommodate these vehicles inside the lot,” an official said.
Facilities at Katpadi
He added that as of now, 42 CCTV cameras were working in Katpadi station. They included the cameras at front circulating area, portico, platform numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
“On platforms 1 and 2, the cameras cover from one end to the other end. Apart from the platforms, the cameras also cover the parking area,” he said.
In fact, work to make available wi-fi facility is going on at the station. The process for enhancing speed is under way now.
“The area coverage is less now. We are looking at installing modems at more number of places. Now, platforms 1 and 2 are fully covered,” he added.
While work on the escalator will be completed in a month, one of the two lifts would be ready soon.
After Katpadi station, the DRM inspected the Brammapuram gate (level-crossing 52) and awarded the staff for maintenance. He visited the Tiruvalam station and Thalangai level crossing 41. Officials said Mr. Gulati announced an award for C. Anisha, a traffic staff here, for answering questions on safety and procedures.
