Police stop Maoist during routine vehicle check

An armed Naxal belonging to CPI (ML) New Democracy party was arrested by the district police here late on Tuesday.

Town DSP Rajamahendra Naik told newsmen that they arrested one Madhu, regional committee secretary of New Democracy naxal group, during vehicle checking operations at Garla village on Tuesday.

Producing him before mediapersons on Wednesday, he said they recovered one Sten gun, 10 bullets, one kit bag and revolutionary literature from him. He was involved in 20 offences including murder cases. The police also arrested two other persons acting as couriers to the naxal group — Kantha Rao and Prasad. They are said to be members of Arunodaya Cultural Group.

The DSP said they would be produced before the court at Yellandu in Kothagudem district. Meanwhile, New Democracy leaders Gummadi Narasaiah, Chinna Chandranna, Potu Ranga Rao and wife of Madhu, Padma took part in a rally in Mahabubabad town demanding that police produce Madhu before court. They said they feared that he would be killed by the police in an ‘encounter’.

The police said they had information on the movement of groups of armed Maoists in the district in the recent past. They belonged to CPI ML groups.
