Film financier, sons arrested for usury

The Central Crime Branch of the Chennai City Police arrested film financier S. Mukundchand Bothra and his two sons Sandeep Bothra and Gagan Bothra on Tuesday on charges of harassing a businessman seeking kandhu vatti (usurious interest ) on loan disbursed.

A senior official of CCB said Mukundchand Bothra had given loan to Senthil K. Ganapathy who runs a hotel in T. Nagar. The hotelier had taken a loan of ₹83.5 lakh from the financier for which he had been paying interest and principal regularly. However, the financier started harassing the complainant seeking higher interest rates due to which he filed a complaint with the Chennai Police Commissioner on June 15. The CCB registered a case, and during investigation, found that the businessman had given ₹4 lakh towards interest through wire transfer and had been depositing money in several tranches during 2016 and 2017.

Also, the financier, along with his two sons, had threatened the businessman to pay ₹4.24 crore within 10 days towards full repayment.

The police official said, “The financier and his sons had threatened dire consequences if the victim did not hand over the hotel as loan repayment.”
