Govt. awaiting court order on reservation for State board students: official

Counselling for management quota seats through Centralised Admission Committee (Centac) in Puducherry is still in limbo as the government of Puducherry is yet to take a decision on this.

When contacted, Director (Health), Department of Health and Family Welfare Services, K.V. Raman said they were waiting for the court order related to the 85% seat reservation to State board students and 15% for others in MBBS and BDS courses in Tamil Nadu.

“We have also received representations from people seeking reservation in deemed universities for Puducherry students. Besides this, we are still getting NRI applications for medical seats. We will fix the dates for counselling for management quota seats after the court judgment,” he said.

He added that the counselling for government quota seats in MBBS courses was held before July 24 as per the directions of Medical Council of India (MCI). “The Chief Minister has written to the MCI seeking permission to postpone the dates of counselling for management quota. Otherwise, the Puducherry students would be losing seats to candidates from other States,” Dr. Raman said.

However, Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi tweeted: “Enquiry from the Medical Council of India reveals any delay in counselling schedule shall call for contempt of court. Hence, Government of Puducherry ought to follow court directions.”

Writ plea

With regard to a writ petition filed by five students who were denied admission by private medical institutions in Puducherry despite being allotted seats through Centac, Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, Madras High Court, on July 21, has directed the Director of Health and Family Welfare, Higher Education Department and Secretary to Government, Health Department, to reserve five seats in the first year MBBS for the academic session 2017-18.
