HC dismisses plea on PET bottle rules

more-in

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Tuesday dismissed a plea to defer the State government’s plan to make it mandatory to store and sell alcohol only in glass bottles.

On July 10, the State government invited suggestions from citizens over a notification to amend rules under the Maharashtra Prohibition Act to stop the use of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles for alcohol storage and sale.

The High Court was hearing a petition seeking that the rules be deferred.

Additional government pleader Hiten Venegavkar said the challenge to the draft rules is premature, as the State government is still in the decision-making process to ban storage of alcohol in plastic bottles. The government aims to do this in public interest as reports say this causes health hazards. The bench accepted that legislation and legislature process cannot be stayed, and dismissed the plea.
