NBA leader Medha Patkar to begin indefinite fast at Barwani

Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) leader Medha Patkar will begin her indefinite fast for rehabilitation of 40,000 families in the state, at Madhya Pradesh's Barwani district from tomorrow.

Patkar said the state has asked the affected families in the submergence area of the dam, close to Narmada river in MP to vacate their dwellings by July 31.

"I am going to start my indefinite fast along with oustees, activists and others at Barwani tomorrow," Patkar told PTI over phone today.

"More than 40,000 families in MP's Barwani, Alirajpur, Dhar and Khargone districts had been displaced due to the closure of the gates of Sardar Sarovar Dam in built on Narmada river, last month," she added.

The state officials are forcing the affected people to move to the tin sheds built by it but this make-shift arrangements are devoid of basic infrastructure, she added.

The state was flouting the Supreme Court's orders of 2005 and 2017 regarding rehabilitation of oustees, she claimed.

"I want that the gates of Sardar Sarovar Dam should be opened and the oustees rehabilitated first. The reservoirs in were full with water due to recent rains and there was no urgency to store the water in Sardar Sarovar Dam," she argued.
