Veteran freedom fighter and Gandhian K E Mammen passed away due to old age related ailments at a private hospital here today.
He was 97 and a bachelor.
He was admitted to the hospital few days ago and died today after his condition worsened, hospital sources said.
Mammen was very active in public life by intervening in social issues connected with people till some time back.
He was on the forefront of the anti-liquor campaign in the state.
In a condolence message, Governor P Sathasivam said that 'we have lost a freedom fighter who inspired younger generations through timely and spirited interventions in social issues, upholding Gandhian ideals in words and deeds".
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, his cabinet colleagues, former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Opposition leader in the state assembly Ramesh Chennithala were among those who condoled the death of Mammen.
In his condolence message, Vijayan said that Mammen was a person who kept alive the values of the national movement till his last days.
He was a strong follower of the father of the nation, Vijayan added.
