Needed: apolitical President

more-in

It is unfortunate that elections for the constitutional posts of President and Vice President have turned into a bitter battle between political parties (“Congress levels charges against Venkaiah,” July 25). When Pratibha Patil was chosen by the UPA as presidential candidate, there were several allegations were made against her but she still got elected with an overwhelming majority. It is now the Congress’s turn to cast aspersions on the probity of the ruling coalition’s vice presidential candidate, Venkaiah Naidu. If errors of omissions and commissions made by politicians are ignored as they assume high constitutional offices, all talk of ‘zero tolerance for corruption’ will sound empty. If parties are serious about dealing with corruption, it is high time for them to build a consensus to appoint only apolitical persons with a clean image to such positions, persons whom the citizens can treat as role models.
