It could have prevented loss of seats

Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi on Monday expressed her unhappiness on the lack of effort shown by the government in bringing a legislation guaranteeing 50% seats in private medical institutions as government quota. In a statement, Ms. Bedi said: “Instead of a postponement of a counselling, the Cabinet ought to have legislated as Tamil Nadu did. They should have ensured 50% seats for Puducherry students, but they settled for only 36.6% seats thereby causing a loss. She said a legislation mandating private institutions to part with 50% seats as government quota could have prevented loss of seats in deemed varsities.

‘Only leftover seats’

“Deemed universities are a part of a national pool and have been substantially allotted as the website update.

“Puducherry will get only leftover seats and passed on to State quota only if there are no other takers from outside Puducherry. People must receive correct information. It is the duty of the government to do so and people have a right to know,” she added.

Ms. Bedi said false information was being spread that the deemed universities did not spare medical seats after they got “annoyed” because of her.

“Whoever has made it appears either it’s a deliberate effort to spread misinformation or is ignorant himself. All deemed university seats are allotted strictly on NEET merit list by Director-General of Health. Hence, there can be no diversion,” she added.
