An inter-ministerial team today began a visit to Assam to carry out an on-the-spot assessment of the flood situation in the state.
The team will conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the flood situation and will be visiting flood-affected areas of Biswanath, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Barpeta, Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj districts of Assam till July 28, an official release said.
This is the first time that an inter-ministerial central team is visiting the state in the midst of flood period to assess the damage which signifies the urgent follow up action taken by the central government.
The seven-member team is visiting Assam following directions by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after his meeting with Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on July 18 in New Delhi, the release said.
The floods in Assam have claimed 76 lives so far. More than 20 districts were affected by the recent floods in the state.
