The ruling Congress is likely to utilise the visit of members belonging to Assembly Committee on Public Accounts and Committee on Estimates to New Delhi, starting July 30, to brief national leaders of various political parties on the ongoing turf war with Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi.
While the 12-member Committee on Public Accounts is headed by R. Siva, belonging to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), an ally of the Congress, the 13-member Committee on Estimates is headed by A. Anbalagan of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) (Amma).
Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy is an ex-officio member on both these crucial legislative committees.
Members belonging to the principal Opposition party AINRC and Independent MLA, V. Ramachandran, who had extended support to the ruling establishment, are also part of the committees.
Discussions likely
Official sources said the committee members would be holding discussions with parliamentary committees and ministry officials to apprise the needs and issues faced by the Union Territory.
They would visit places of importance, including an organic farm, to get acquainted with the latest developments.
Sources in the ruling party told The Hindu that party legislators and those belonging to alliance partners would certainly meet leaders of various political parties to brief them on the administrative impasse because of the stand-off with Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi.
The MLAs would take up with national leaders, including those of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, the recent unilateral appointment of three BJP leaders as nominated members in the Assembly.
The members would brief them about the administration of oath by Ms. Bedi before the Speaker took a decision on the swearing-in ceremony.
Party sources said invitations would be sent to AIADMK and AINRC members as legislators in both the parties had raised “concerns” about the style of functioning of the Lt. Governor.
The committee members would be in the national capital till August 3, sources added.
