Government doctors who supposed to instill confidence in patients through scientific temperament, have performed Mrityunjaya Homam to turn the tide against increasing infant deaths allegedly due to bad aura.

Doctors of the Gynecology and Obstetrics department in Gandhi Hospital, one of Telangana’s biggest public facility, performed the Homam at the newly built Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The doctors mostly women, chanted the Mrityunjaya mantra for four hours while the Homam has been performed by four priests, inside the hospital. The incident came to light as few of the patients in other rooms of the premises complained smoke emanating from the yet to be inaugurated ICU. “With the TRS government encouraging women for institutional deliveries more women particularly in critical stage are coming here, resulting in more deaths,” DR Anupama, head of the department reasoned out.

She said that the decision with the permission of hospital superintendent was taken to instill confidence in patients that come from all over the state. “Just like all newly built government buildings have Grihapravesham function, we have performed homam here, there is nothing wrong in it,” the doctor said. She added that they have not collected any money from the patients and the patients are happy that a homam has been performed to cleanse the aura in the hospital which has witnessed a spurt in deaths in recent months. However the Superintendent of the hospital has order an in-house probe into the incident.

Meanwhile, state Jana Vignana Vedika President Mr. Ramesh pointed out that government hospitals belongs to all the people and doctors should have left their religion at the their homes before coming to the hospital to discharge their duties. Gandhi hospital is the busiest government hospital in the state with no less than 2500 patients lining up for treatment every single day.
