Retired professor granted bail

The Madras High Court Bench here on Sunday held a special sitting and granted interim bail to retired history professor T. Jeyaraman, 63, of Mayiladuthurai in Nagapattinam district in two criminal cases registered against him in connection with the Kadiramangalam protests.

Justice J. Nisha Babu granted the relief since it was reported that the petitioner’s father had died on Saturday due to failing health, and therefore, he had to attend the funeral ceremony and perform the final rites.

Accepting advocate R. Venkatesan’s request to order the petitioner’s release without insisting on furnishing of sureties, the judge directed the Superintendent of Tiruchi Central Prison to release the prisoner forthwith without sureties.

Making it clear that he should be escorted by policemen during his release period, the judge directed the petitioner to return to the prison by 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

The order was passed after obtaining Justice A.M. Basheer Ahmed’s consent over phone.

Early this week, Mr. Justice Ahmed had reserved orders on a regular bail application filed by Mr. Jeyaraman and a few other protesters. However, the judge asked Ms. Justice Banu to grant interim bail in view of the emergent situation.

The petitioner had been booked for attempt to murder in one of the two cases booked against him.
