Denied leave, a police constable attempted suicide in Petlaburj on Monday by consuming a substance used to kill ants.

According to Charminar ACP K. Ashok Chakrawarthy, 27-year-old Waheed Ali, a constable with the City Armed Reserve, sought leave on Monday. His superior denied the leave on the grounds that Ali had frequently availed himself of leave. The constable was told to approach the principal of the teaching institute he was attached to. When he could not get leave, Ali allegedly consumed ant-killer.

He was rushed to a private hospital in Namapally where a stomach wash was performed. The constable was out of danger and the matter was being investigated, said the ACP.
