After hours of interrogation by various security agencies, the police have arrested a Pakistani national under the Foreigners Act read with Passport (entry into India) rules and taken him away to be lodged in Puzhal central prison in judicial remand.

After the police and other security agencies completed the interrogation, the Erwadi police, on Sunday, arrested Mohamed Yunus (67), the Pakistani national and two locals, who tried to illegally ferry him to Sri Lanka.

Yunus was arrested under sections 465, 468, 471 (using forged documents as genuine), 419 and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code and section 14 of the Foreigners Act, read with sections 3 (a) and 6 (a) of the Passport (entry into India) Rules, police said. Police have given his address as 12/75, Mohamed Shai Street, Jodiya Bazar, Karachi, Pakistan.

The two locals from Erwadi, A Abdul Ajeez (26) and H Syed Abudhahir (23), were arrested under section 120 (b) (criminal conspiracy) of IPC, police said.

Fake Aadhaar cards

Further investigation revealed that Abudhagir, who was from Erwadi, had accompanied Yunus, when he clandestinely landed at Ammapettai in Thanjavur district on May 2, police said. The local resident had gone to Sri Lanka by ferry illegally and returned with Yunus, police said.

After landing at Ammapettai, Yunus went to Mannadi in north Chennai and obtained two fake Aadhaar cards – one in Hindi to show as proof when he travelled in north India and the other in Tamil for his stay in Tamil Nadu, police said.

Though he was aged, Kamal, the drug trafficker in Colombo, preferred him for the operation as he was well-versed in Tamil, English, Hindi, Urdu and Sinhala, he told the police.
