Loot 77 is not your conventional college band. It has an interesting origin and quite a backstory behind its name. This five-member line-up has Eddie from AAT Media College on vocals, Reuben from Madras Christian College (MCC), on guitar and backup vocals, Aaron from Loyola College, on base, Samuel from Balaji Engineering College on drums, and Jeba from MCC, on the keyboard.
Aaron and Reuben went to high school together. “After we played at a couple of school competitions and synced really well, I got Aaron to play with me at church where I have been playing with Samuel and Jeba for a long time,” recounts Reuben. A few church events and jamming sessions later, the boys decided that they wanted to start a band. This was when Daniel, their sound engineer, introduced them to Eddie. After a trial jamming session, they knew that Daniel had found them the perfect guy.
Origins
The next task was coming up with a name. With covers being made, and registrations happening at college culturals; they were hard pressed for time. “We tried coming up with names and told all our friends to do so as well. No one could think of a name that all of us liked, and as a last-minute decision, we picked the word Loot. Someone suggested that we add a number, and just like that, we became Loot 77,” says Aaron, laughing. Multiple efforts have been made to change the name but it is not easy when the band associated with the name manages to create a huge impact and a fan-base wherever they play.
Loot 77 is primarily a rock band while they also dabble in pop and rap. They look to Avenged Sevenfold, Bruno Mars, DNCE, The Beatles, A Love Electric, Backstreet Boys, Linkin Park, and Skillet as major influences. With their overlapping college timings, they manage to meet up over the weekends to de-stress.
This rock band that is less than a year old has already participated at Deepwoods in MCC and won the third place for western electricals apart from receiving special mentions.
Loot 77 is famous for its covers that are recorded live at their performances or at studios. “We have come up with an original composition called No Longer Remains that we haven’t performed in front of an audience yet. But we are quite excited about launching it soon,” says Eddie.
He goes on to say that they are currently working on more original compositions.
