The University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru, has been rated the best agricultural university in south India and the third best among the State-run in the country.
The rating exercise was taken up by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) for the first time, on the performance of 57 agricultural universities in the country in the last five years.
The parameters for rating included teaching, research, extension, sports, and cultural activities.
While the UAS-B is third nationally among State farm universities, its position slips to six if the Central farm/veterinary institutes are also taken into consideration.

The ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute of Karnal has been ranked No 1 on the national list. UAS-B is the only farm university from Karnataka to find itself among the top best farm institutions in the country. University of Horticultural Sciences-Bagalkot, which is relatively a new one, has managed to get 13th rank while UAS-Dharwad has been placed in 25th position. UAHS-Shimoga, which is the most recent of the State’s farm Universities, has been given 41st rank. The Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University-Bidar is in the 45th position.
Listing the prominent achievements of UAS-B in the last five years, its Director of Extension M.S. Nataraju said two farm technologies had been patented while 14 technologies had been submitted for patenting. Apart from this, 17 new crop varieties and 98 farm technologies had been developed and also transferred to farmers’ field by the university.
