‘Why no action against Minister?’

DMK working president M.K. Stalin on Wednesday charged that the government was not taking action against a minister and top police officers who were allegedly bribed by a gutkha manufacturer.

Therefore, gutkha, which was banned, was easily available in the market, he told journalists after walking out of the Legislative Assembly.

“In many places in Chennai, gutkha is being sold continuously. In the last two to three days, we have been noting down places where it is being sold,” he said naming a few shops and hotels where the banned substance is reportedly being sold. Mr. Stalin also showed some photographs to the media to substantiate the claim.

Explaining what happened in the Assembly, Mr. Stalin said,

“Ideally, cases should have been filed against them (senior police officers and a minister). They should have been interrogated, arrested and jailed. But instead of taking action against them for colluding in the sale of gutkha, they are bringing a breach of privilege motion against us.

“We are ready to face it,” he said.

Deputy Leader of Opposition, Mr. Duraimurugan said there was no need for an opposition MLA to show how they got certain documents.

“This is the privilege of the opposition. We don’t need to show how we got a document. Going to the police station is not our duty.

“It is our duty to bring it to the notice of the government,” he said.
