A system developed over the Bay of Bengal a couple of weeks back has been shifting towards Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra, bringing good amount of rain in the eastern parts of the state as well as the central and south-central regions of the country, an IMD official said.
"A system developed over the Bay of Bengal a couple of weeks back has been gradually shifting towards Maharashtra. It brought good showers in Odisha in the last week, followed by Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra. The significance of this shift is that Vidarbha region in Maharashtra is getting good showers," Dr A K Srivastav, head of climate monitoring and analysis group, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) told PTI today.
There is also a depression forming over central India that has pulled the south-west monsoon, which brought more showers, the official said adding, "For the last five days, these developments are taking place gradually and the intensity of precipitation has gone up significantly."
The data released by IMD's New Delhi centre today also confirmed this development.
Till July 18, Vidarbha region's cumulative rainfall from June 1 to July 18 was 278.9 mm with departure of -20 per cent. However, the rainfall registered in the last 24 hours, Vidarbha region on an average received 58.4 mm rainfall and the deficiency level changed from -20 per cent to -6 per cent.
"Parts of Marathwada and Vidarbha regions will continue to receive heavy showers in the next 48 hours. This would certainly improve the overall rainfall figures and support the sowing activities and growth of the crops," the officer said.
