The Cellular Operators’ Association of India (COAI) has admitted that two of its members’ views on the Interconnect User Charges (IUC) are different from that of the telecom operators’ body.
Kindly note that Aircel and Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJio) have a divergent view in this matter and they will represent individually on this subject, COAI Director-General Rajan S. Mathews said in a letter to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
The body did not elaborate what the differences were.
IUC is a charge – now 14 paise per minute – that a telecom operator pays another to terminate a call to another service provider’s network.
On Tuesday, at an open house called by the regulator in Delhi, RJio had locked horns with incumbent operators over IUC. While Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular suggested nearly doubling of IUC, RJio and Aircel were in favour of lowering it. RJio had also proposed a ‘bill and keep model’, meaning scrapping of IUC.
COAI had also sought the model based on which TRAI had calculated IUC charges earlier.
