Says farmers ending life every day

Several Opposition members in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday gave notices under Rule 267 seeking an adjournment to discuss the agrarian crisis.

Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien, however, said a discussion had been accepted and members could raise their concerns during the proceedings.

Farmer suicides

Demanding a debate, Janata Dal(U) leader Sharad Yadav said 15 to 20 farmers were committing suicide every day.

Though the production of pulses had risen by 33%, the government had lowered import duty on them to zero. Hence, farmers were forced to go for distress sale, he said.

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh said farmers were getting “bullets” instead of fair price for their produce. Among those who moved the notices are Congress leaders Pramod Tiwari and Kapil Sibal, Samajwadi Party leaders Ram Gopal Yadav and Naresh Agarwal and CPI (M) leader Sitaram Yechury.
