Scores of activists of various student unions took to the streets here on Wednesday to mount pressure on the State Government to implement the free KG to PG education scheme as well as the mid-day meal programme in government junior colleges to fulfil its promises made to the student community.
Activists owing allegiance to the SFI, AISF, PDSU and TVV staged a joint demonstration at the Dharna Chowk here to press for their charter of demands.
The demonstrators tried to enter into the Collectorate to represent their grievances to the authorities but were prevented by a strong posse of police personnel.
Addressing the demonstrators at Dharna Chowk, SFI district secretary T. Nagaraju alleged that the TRS government has miserably failed to deliver on its major promise of providing free education from KG to PG level till date.
The persons at the helm of affairs are trying to project the recently set up some Gurukul (residential) schools as the much-touted “free KG to PG programme”, he charged.
He deplored that the conditions in many State-run schools across the State remained woefully pathetic, devoid of proper toilets and classrooms.
Other speakers flayed the government for allegedly contemplating to close many State-run schools, citing low student strength.
They demanded that the government should strengthen the State-run schools to safeguard the interests of underprivileged students, bring in a legislation to regulate the fee structure in private schools and resolve all the long pending grievances of students. SFI district president Ch. Ramesh, AISF district secretary Ranjith, PDSU district president Suresh, TVV district leader Pavithra and others took part in the joint protest.
