The police fired in the air to disperse agitating employees of N C Hills Autonomous Council who are on strike, in front of the council office in Assam's Dima Hasao district today, a police officer said.
The police also arrested some leaders and members of N C Hills Autonomous Council Employee Union (NCHACEU) who are on strike since July 10, demanding immediate release of their salary pending for the last nine months.
The agitating employees stopped elected representatives and obstructed the entry of Chief Executive Member of the council Debolal Garlosa from entering his office today.
The police initially tried to disperse the agitating employees who started pelting stones, following which the police resorted to cane charge, blank firing and lobbed tear gas shells.
The situation has been brought under control, the police said.
