A friend who intervened was attacked too and may lose arm, say police

A café supervisor in Punjabi Bagh and his friend were stabbed following a minor argument over his refusal to bring beer for a neighbour in Punjabi Bagh here this past week.

The incident happened on July 13, after Puran Singh returned from the café and received a call from Laxman Vohra. “It was around 9 p.m. Mr. Vohra and two others, Suraj and Manoj, were drunk. Mr. Vohra asked me to arrange for more alcohol but I refused. This angered him and he punched me in the chest,” Mr. Singh said in his statement to the police.

Chased and thrashed

He got scared and left the house but was allegedly chased by Mr. Vohra. The accused, who caught Mr. Singh near Club Road, allegedly slapped and punched him repeatedly. “He kept saying he would kill me and took out a knife,” the statement added.

Mr. Singh’s friend Ramesh, who was returning from work and happened to pass by the area, spotted him getting thrashed. Before he could intervene, Mr. Singh was stabbed in the back of the head.

Mr. Ramesh, who tried to help again, was stabbed in the hand.

Mr. Vohra allegedly fled the scene. Three persons came to the rescue of the victims and took them to a private hospital nearby.

The police were informed and recorded their statements. A case was registered and the accused held based on Mr. Singh’s statement.

“We arrested the accused from his house. He later confessed to his involvement in the crime. Both victims will survive but the doctors have said the victim who sustained a deep cut on the arm may lose the limb,” said a police officer.
