Unending wait for a green signal and the road with no vehicular traffic getting a green signal because of the pre-set timers will soon become a thing of the past.

Revamping the conventional automatic traffic signal system, traffic police personnel have been instructed to use signal controllers at major signals.

With the mini signal controller, the policeman on duty at the traffic umbrella can change signals according to the traffic conditions. The policeman can turn the signal to red on a road with very thin traffic and turn the signal green on a stretch with heavy traffic. To ensure uninterrupted signal system, UPS units have been installed at major traffic signals.

M. Durai, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Coimbatore City, said that policemen on duty at the traffic umbrellas will control the signals manually using the controller depending on the volume of traffic. “Sometimes, traffic flow will be heavy on one stretch with no rush on the opposite side. The controller can be used to give more time or cut down the time at signals in such cases,” said Mr. Durai.

Soon, the controller as well as the LED signal lighting at all traffic signals will have UPS power back too. “We are planning to ensure UPS power backup at 56 main traffic signals within the city. UPS have been installed art 28 traffic signals so far. The UPS can ensure power backup for three hours,” he said.

The signals are functional between 7.30 a.m. and 10 p.m. Signals at major signals will be functioning up to 10.30 p.m.
