Survivor says victims didn’t get chance to react

The family of Swarn Singh, who died while cleaning a water harvesting tank in Ghitorni on Saturday, has alleged that he wasn’t briefed properly. He wouldn’t have taken up the job had that been the case, they said.

“We have never cleaned drains and sewers. We only clean water tanks and borewells, besides other tasks daily wage labourers perform. Had he known that he was being asked to clear garbage, he wouldn’t have agreed,” said Harbans Singh, a relative of Swarn Singh.

‘No chance to react’

Jaspal Singh, Swarn Singh’s son who survived, said the victims didn’t get a chance to respond as they lost consciousness within minutes.

According to the police, Niranjan had called the workers to clear a blockage in the drain that is connected to the tank.

Former cop tweets

The police are now probing why the drain was connected to the tank.

Former Delhi Police commissioner and UPSC member tweeted on Saturday saying, “Death of 4 sanitation workers in Ghitorni area is sad & disgusting. These men operating in inhuman environs deserve safer work technologies.”
